Who We Are

Ship 24, the "Jolly Roger", is a Sea Scout Ship based out of Houston, Texas. We were founded in 1923 and are currently the oldest active Ship in the nation. We have an on the water activity usually about once a month. These activities range from sailing smaller 1-man vessels to sailing larger boats that require a crew around the Galveston-Clear Lake area.  We meet every Tuesday night at 7:30 at St. Stephens United Methodist Church Scout House at 2002 W. 43rd Street, Houston, Texas 77018.

What is Sea Scouts?

Sea Scouts is a youth organization for males and females ages 14-21. Sea Scouts emphasizes on training youth in nautical skills. It prepares youth for careers in the maritime industry, military and to be responsible boaters as adults. Sea Scouts teaches youth seamanship, discipline, service opportunities and prepares them to be leaders. Sea Scouts is a sister organization of the Boy Scouts of America and like the BSA has ranks, leadership positions and wears uniforms. The 4 ranks are Apprentice, Ordinary, Able and Quartermaster (which only 0.5% of all Sea Scouts get).

What We Do

In Ship 24 we do a wide variety of activities throughout the year. During the Fall and Winter we focus on sailing larger vessels while in the Spring and Summer we sail smaller 1 or 2 man boats. As a Sea Scout you will learn a variety of skills such as basic and advanced seamanship, how to tie knots, boat repair, first aid, maritime communication techniques, piloting, navigation, opportunities to show leadership, close-order drill, and much much more.

You will have the opportunity to participate in many unique events. The crew regularly performs color guard ceremonies, for organizations ranging from the Boy and Sea Scouts themselves to presenting the colors at baseball games. The crew also attends events such as Minto Rendezvous where Ships from all across the South compete in events testing their nautical skills, "Sail Daze" where Ships from the Houston Fleet come together and sail, Sea Scout Academy, held at the beautiful Sea Scout Base Galveston, where Sea Scouts from Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana attend classes covering a wide range of maritime skills to help them advance in rank and grow their nautical skills.

If you want to join the best youth organization in America than Sea Scouts is right for you!
